“What Actually Happens at Pelvic Floor Therapy?”
This was one of my biggest questions before going. Not whether it would help, but what it would actually be like. It’s easy to fill in the blanks yourself, and usually those assumptions are what keep you from booking the appointment in the first place.
I went in not knowing what to expect. Was it going to be uncomfortable or awkward?
What I experienced was something entirely different. It felt calm, thoughtful and much more focused on understanding my body than “fixing” it.
The first part of a pelvic floor therapy appointment isn’t physical, it’s a conversation.
You talk through:
Your pregnancy and delivery history
Any symptoms you’ve noticed (even subtle ones)
Your daily movement patterns and routines
Before jumping into exercises, there’s a strong focus on understanding how your body is currently functioning.
For me, that meant learning:
How I was breathing (and how it was impacting my core)
Where I was holding tension without realizing it
How my body was compensating in everyday movement
It wasn’t about doing more, it was about noticing more.
I think I expected something more prescriptive, but what I found was something more collaborative. It felt like learning how to work with my body again, instead of trying to override it. That shift made everything else more effective.
Pelvic floor therapy isn’t about jumping into something intense. It’s about building awareness, restoring coordination and creating a foundation your body can rely on.
