Is It Too Early to Start Pelvic Floor Therapy?

Short answer: no.

Longer answer, this is something I wish more women understood sooner. At one point, I assumed pelvic floor therapy was something you turned to after there was a problem; after symptoms showed up, after something felt off, after recovery didn’t go the way you expected.

What I didn’t realize is how impactful it can be before things feel more significant, or even when they still feel manageable.

Why Starting During Pregnancy Can Help

Beginning pelvic floor therapy during pregnancy allows you to better understand how your body is adapting in real time.

A pelvic floor therapist can help you:

  • Manage sensations like heaviness or pressure

  • Learn how to properly relax the pelvic floor in preparation for birth

  • Support your body with exercises that evolve as your pregnancy progresses

This early guidance can make a meaningful difference in both how you feel during pregnancy and how you recover afterward.

When I Actually Considered It

Pelvic floor therapy didn’t come into the picture during pregnancy for me; it came later, when I started noticing small things that were easy to brush off. There were subtle changes that didn’t feel urgent, but didn’t feel quite right either. It was easy to think, this is probably just part of the process. But that question lingered: Does it have to be?

Pelvic Floor Therapy as Preventative Care

One of the biggest shifts for me was realizing this doesn’t have to be reactive. You might not think of pelvic floor therapy the same way you think about an annual physical or dental visit, but it can serve a similar purpose. Pelvic floor therapy can also be approached as part of your overall wellness routine. Much like an annual physical or dental visit, a pelvic floor “check-in” helps you understand your baseline; how to properly engage, relax, and coordinate these muscles. This awareness alone can help reduce the likelihood of future symptoms; And once you have that awareness, it changes how you move through your day.

It’s Also Never Too Late

If you’re already postpartum, or even years beyond, it’s still worth exploring.

Pelvic floor therapy can be beneficial at any stage and is often most effective when symptoms are still mild. Addressing imbalances early can help prevent them from progressing into something that more noticeably impacts your daily life. It’s easy to assume that if something isn’t painful or disruptive yet, it doesn’t need attention. I thought that too.

A More Supported Recovery

Postpartum recovery is often framed as something you simply get through, and for a long time, that’s how I approached it too...but it doesn’t have to feel that way. With the right support, recovery can feel more intentional, more steady, more connected, and less like you’re figuring it out as you go.

Pelvic floor therapy helps bridge that gap.
